Children’s Theater
There’s no doubt that kids love being in the spotlight. Give your budding performer the opportunity to learn about music or theater.
Childrens theaters often hold auditions for upcoming plays and musicals. Kids and teens can audition for specific roles or for a chorus role. There are usually callbacks to audition for the lead roles. Once the cast is selected, rehearsals begin. This is where your child learns the acting, singing and dancing required for the show. Then, of course the children perform the show for audiences. Since these are typically family-friendly plays, performances often take place on weekend evenings and afternoons. Because each role must be filled, actors must commit to the dates ahead of time. Many theaters have multiple casts for each show, so that actors can trade dates if necessary. Bring your calendar to the audition so they can plan for any conflicts.
Singing and Acting Auditions
Auditions often consist of singing part of a song, alone, on stage. At callbacks young actors are often asked to sing a song or perform part of a scene from the upcoming production. Some theaters try to include everyone. If someone doesn’t get a lead role, they are cast in the chorus. This gives them experience in how the theater works and what is required to move up to a lead role in a future production. Other theaters stick to the script and only cast the number of actors needed for the show.
Acting, Singing and Dance Classes
Many kids theaters offer classes in specific areas of theater, like singing, auditioning and improvisation. Some theaters only allow students who are enrolled in classes to audition for shows.
Musical Theater
Most of the programs for children put on musicals. They’re engaging for the young performers and audience members. If your teen is interested in exploring more serious drama, try a community theater.
Community Theatres
Community theatres stage productions with adult and teen actors, although they often cast younger actors as well. Many community theaters put on some productions with all-youth casts.
Whether your child is seriously considering a career in theater or just looking for something fun and productive to do, acting in a children’s theater is a great experience.
