Swimming & Diving
Each year more people participate in the swimming than in any other sport. Swimming is the nation's number one activity because no other sport or activity produces as many benefits for the individual throughout one's life, from early childhood onward. It is safe, with less risk of injury than most other activities and promotes a clean, healthy lifestyle. What a wonderful way to cool down on a summer day, get fit & just have fun!

Swimming is a part of summer everywhere, but especially here in Orange County. Many people have backyard pools and everyone has access to a pool through a city, a local school, a homeowner's association or a community group like the Y. Swimming is great excercise for children and adults alike. When it's hot out there's nothing better than relaxing in or near the water, whether it's the local pool or one of the beautiful Orange County Beaches.
Kids love to just play in the water, but it's important that they learn how to swim too. You can't count on swim lessons to keep little kids water safe, but learning pre-swimming skills still has benefits. Kids get used to having fun in the water. This helps prevent a panic reaction if they ever fall in accidentally. It's also easier to learn to swim when they're older if they're already used to breathing, blowing bubbles and kicking. There are aquatics classes for babies as young as 3 months old. Many swim schools operate year round in their indoor pools.
When kids are 5 or 6 years old they can learn to swim for safety, pleasure, exercise and even competition. Older kids who don't need "every minute" supervision any more are often required to pass a swim test before being allowed access to a pool, waterpark or beach area. Every city recreation department offers swimming classes in the summer. Some even have swimming summer camps. If your child is afraid of the water or behind her peers in swimming skills, you might choose a calmer or more private swim school. There are more than 25 private swim schools in Orange County, so you're sure to find the one that's the right fit for your child.
Public pools seem to be more chlorinated than they used to be, which irritates a lot of kids eyes. Some pools now have salt water instead of chlorinated water. If your child regularly swims in a highly chlorinated pool, a pair of goggles will protect their eyes.
Whatever method you choose, swim lessons are an expected part of childhood in Orange County and across the country.
